The St. John Fisher College baseball team scored double digits for the third time in five games in a
10-5 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College on Sunday night at the Chain of Lakes Park Stadium in Winter Haven, FL.
Jason Beaumont pitched five innings for the Cardinals to earn the win, giving up just one earned run while striking out three. Fisher is now 4-1 on the season.
For the second day in a row, Fisher scored eight runs in an inning, using the bottom of the fourth to control the game. Trailing 3-0 coming into the hitting portion of the Cardinals inning,
Chris Roeder singled to left to lead off the inning. That hit by Roeder was Fisher's first of the game, but certainly not its last.
Ben Bostick entered the box and smoked a ball to right center, motoring around for a triple while driving in Roeder.
Steve Karnyski walked and the next pitch to
Brad Rush was a wild one, making it to the backstop, allowing Bostick to score from third. With the score now 3-2 in favor of Gwynedd-Mercy, Rush doubled to right center to drive in Karnyski and knot up the game.
Then
Matt Klock stepped up to the plate and roped a single to right to drive in Rush, the go-ahead run, making the score 4-3. Klock ended up scoring on an error by the shortstop on a
Sean Osterman groundball.
Ben Ward scored after a sacrifice hit by
Ryan Shaughnessy and
Peter Krysztof reached by getting nicked on the helmet.
Roeder came up for the second time in the inning, this time drilling a double to left center to collect two more RBI, gaining an 8-3 margin over the Griffins.
Gwynedd-Mercy scored two runs in the first inning after its second batter reached on an error by Karnyski at first base. The base runner stole second and then scored on a hit-and-run single to right center. With two outs, the Griffins cleanup hitter doubled to center over Osterman's head to drive in the second run.
In the top of the fourth, Gwynedd-Mercy added another run after two singles, a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position, and a sacrifice hit to Roeder.
Klock produced a run in the fifth when he walked, stole third and caused an errant throw by the catcher to reach home plate. Bostick drove in Krysztof, who walked, in the sixth with a single towards the line in left field.
Krysztof, Bostick and Klock each led the Cardinals with two hits while Bostick also led the team with two RBI along with Roeder. Klock paced Fisher with two runs scored.
Jeremy Willard entered for Beaumont in the sixth and allowed four hits on two runs but induced two 6-4-3 double plays to end both his innings pitched.
Adam Pettinella came in for the eighth inning and after intentionally walking a batter to load the bases he induced a ground out to shortstop to end the inning.
Tim Sylvester came in for the ninth to close out the game, going through the first three batters, ending the game on a strike out looking.
Fisher will return action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against Mount Aloysius in the Cardinals' only doubleheader down in Florida.
