Hughes Hurts the Herons at Home

The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team went on a 5-0 run over the final 17 minutes of the first half and picked up a 14-9 win over visiting William Smith College.

With the win, Fisher improves to 4-3 overall, while the Herons fall to 1-3.  It is the second straight year that the Cardinals have defeated William Smith.
 
With the game tied at 4-4, Fisher went on a 5-0 run over the final 16:26 of the first half to take a 9-4 lead at the half.   Taylor Hughes scored four of her six goals in the first half, including two during the 5-0 run.   Tori Suto scored on a free position shot with 5:57 left in the half, while
Melissa Leonard scored on a free position shot just 20 seconds later during the pivotal run.

William Smith failed to attempt a shot in the final 17 minutes of the first half, as the Cardinals outshot the Herons 19-6 over the opening 30 minutes.
 
The Cardinals led 10-5 midway through the second half, but the Herons rallied, scoring three goals in a 19-second span to make it 10-8 with just over 18 minutes left.

Fisher, however, responded, scoring the game's next four goals.  Hughes netted her sixth of the day with 16:44 left and freshman Erin Ward scored her second of three goals with 14 minutes left.

Melissa Leonhard scored her third goal of the day with 7:11 left.

Fisher goalies Molly Naylon and Caroline Trpcevski combined for the win.  Naylon made three saves over the opening 41 minutes, while Trpcevski made five saves and allowed just one goal.

Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday and will host SUNY Geneseo.
