The St. John Fisher College
women's lacrosse team fell 14-9 to Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon atGrowney Stadium. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-2 on the season while Hamilton improves to 2-2.
In a game of runs, Hamilton added the most important run in the second half after the Cardinals had answered back to close a three-goal halftime deficit. After trailing 7-4 at the half, Fisher came out and knotted the game at 7-7 in just 4:43. It looked like the Cardinals may have seized control back from the Continentals, but Hamilton had answer of its own.
The Continentals scored six-straight goals over the next 16:53 to push the Cardinals to the brink of defeat at 13-7. Fisher broke the streak on a goal off a pass from
Melissa Leonhard to
Jill Zerrillo to cut the margin to five at 13-8.
Kristina Lombard added another Cardinals goal just 3:22 later, but that would be the end of scoring for Fisher on the day.
In the first half, Fisher opened up an early 2-0 lead with Leonhard and Zerrillo getting the Cardinals on the board with free position shots. As the story of the game went, the Continentals used two three-goal runs to put the Cardinals in a hole at the half.
Leonhard finished the game with a team-high three goals and added an assist for four points. Zerrillo was the only other Cardinal with multiple goals, finishing with two. Lombard,
Lindsey Shoales,
Erin Ward and
Taylor Hughes each added a score.
Fisher returns to action at 4 p.m. on Friday when it travels to face SUNY Oneonta.
