Senior Night for Fisher Basketball To Benefit Children's Hospital

The St. John Fisher College men's and women's basketball teams will host East Avenue rival Nazareth College Saturday night for their senior night games in what will be each team's final game of the regular season.

Representing the senior class for the women's team are Jessica Kowalski and Meghan Soja. The Cardinals (11-13, 7-6) are coming off of an 81-72 loss last Saturday to Empire 8 Conference opponent Hartwick College despite a 22-point effort from freshman Portia Velasco. Nazareth (11-13, 4-9), is also coming off of a loss after falling to Penn State Behrend 59-43 this past Tuesday.

These two Empire 8 Conference rivals last played on January 24th earlier this season, when Fisher went to defeat the Golden Flyers 66-57. Fisher is looking to complete the Empire 8 Conference sweep and carry a winning momentum into the Empire 8 Conference Championships, where it will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. Tip-off for the game is set for 6 p.m.

On the men's side, Jordan Gettings is the lone senior class representative. He leads a Fisher squad (10-14, 3-10) that is looking to rebound from a close loss to Empire 8 Conference leader Hartwick College last Saturday. The Cardinals fell 64-62 to the Hawks after Gettings contributed a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Nazareth (16-8, 9-4), is coming off of a 77-61 home win over Stevens this past Saturday.

Earlier in the year, these two teams battled on January 24th to an 85-67 score in favor of the Golden Flyers. The Cardinals will look to finish the season strong against their rivals. Tip-off for the re-match is set for 8 p.m.

Tonight's game also marks the second time this season that the two schools will play each other to benefit the Golisano Children's Hospital. Over the past four years, Fisher and Nazareth have helped to raise money through the “Battle of the Beaks” promotion when the two teams meet each season. Earlier this season at Nazareth the “Battle of the Beaks” raised around $5,000 and another $5,000 at this year's Winter Walk for Strong Kids. The combined fundraising between the two schools is Golisano Children's Hospital's fourth-largest contributor since its inception. Cardinals and Golden Flyers gear will be raffled off during Saturday's game, with the proceeds benefitting the hospital.
