Women's Soccer Gives No. 6 Ithaca First Blemish with 2 OT Tie

BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team gave No. 6 Ithaca College its first blemish of 2012, earning a 0-0 double overtime tie on Sunday afternoon at Growney Stadium. Ithaca entered the game as one of only two teams that had won each of their games this season, out of 448 participating members at the NCAA Division III level.

With the tie, Fisher moves to 5-4-4 overall and 3-0-2 in the Empire 8 Conference while Ithaca goes to 12-0-1, 4-0-1.

The Fisher defense was aggressive all game and Sydney DeVitto was brilliant in net for the Cardinals, making a few extraordinary saves to keep the Bombers off the board.

Four minutes into the second half, DeVitto was challenged on a break away by Rachael Palladino, but made a nice diving stop to deny the shot. Eight minutes later, Jackie Rodabaugh tried DeVitto from point blank range, rifling a shot that the goalkeeper blocked before a Cardinal defender cleared the rebound.

In the first overtime, Kelsey King would take her shot at the Fisher netminder, trying to put one above Devitto's reach from the top corner of the box. The keeper, however, was able to jump to get a piece of the ball before catching it in front of the goal line.

Ithaca tried two breakaways, one in each overtime period, but DeVitto came out to cut the angle of the offensive players each time, forcing the shots to go wide left.

Fisher had its opportunities, the best chance coming in the first half when Kaytlyn Perotti made an outlet pass down the field to Chelsea Oberkrieser. Oberkrieser settled the ball and dribbled into the corner before sending a beautiful cross to a cutting Alexandra Rohloff. The Ithaca keeper dove and missed the ball, but in turn, cut off Rohloff's path to the ball, allowing the ball to skip cleanly through the box.

Vicki Alfieri tried to win it for the Cardinals in the first overtime, but her bulleted shot was saved. The opportunity came when Hannah Gilbride knocked a ball of an Ithaca defender that went out-of-bounds at the end line, earning Fisher a corner. The corner was passed out to Alfieri, but Ithaca goalie Becca Lewis was able to stop the attempt.

Alfieri led the Cardinals with two shots-on-goal while both keepers finished the game with five saves apiece.

Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. next Saturday at home when it puts its unbeaten conference record on the line against Elmira College.
