BOX SCORE
The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team took 103 minutes to defeat the visiting SUNY Geneseo Blue Knights 1-0 in double overtime on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium.
Jake Quattrini scored his third game-winning overtime goal off a pass from
Garhett Varin when he banked the shot off the left post at 103:41. With the win, Fisher improves to 10-5-1 on the season while Geneseo fell to 6-9-1.
In regulation, Fisher outshot the Blue Knights 13-12 and really applied pressure late, taking many opportunities in the second half. The 52nd minute found
Brendan Hughes giving the Cardinals one of its best attempts of the day, catching the post after beating his defender on a loose ball.
Garhett Varin added the most scintillating moment of the first two periods, as two Geneseo defenders shadowed
Joel Castellini through the box, Varin worked to his right and motored past a defender, firing a shot that brought the crowd to its feet, but sailed wide.
Kyle Metcalfe got the win between the pipes, stopping seven shots on the way to his sixth shutout of the season. Fisher took four more shots than the Blue Knights in the contest, including a 4-1 advantage in the overtime periods.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Houghton College in its final regular season game before entering the Empire 8 Conference Championships as the No. 2 seed.
