Women's Basketball Falls to Elmira on Buzzer Beater

With the sound of the horn, the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team fell to visiting Elmira College 67-65 on Friday night at Fisher's Bobby Wanzer Court.

With the loss, Fisher falls to 5-9 overall, while the Soaring Eagles improve to 5-9, 1-2.

The Soaring Eagles pulled out the victory with a jumper from Jessica Zolkowski as the buzzer sounded, giving the visitors their first conference victory of the season.

Fisher, who has overcome deficits of 18 and 20 points already this season, was able to rally from 12 points down and tie the game at 65-65, but could not gain the lead in the final 15 seconds.

Senior Meghan Soja tied the game for Fisher after a defensive rebound off consecutive free throw misses by the Soaring Eagles.  Soja's board was rewarded, as she scored on the ensuing possession.

The Cardinals had an opportunity to take the final shot, but Camaryn Buckner was called for a charge with three seconds remaining, setting up Zolkowski's shot.

With the score 31-30 in favor of the Cardinals, Elmira went on a 16-3 run to build a 12-point lead, its largest of the game.

Fisher's Buckner answered with buckets on consecutive possessions, with the latter a three-point play to make the score 49-42. Back-to-back three-pointers from Sydney Bloomstein and Brooke Seavitt made the score 56-48, while Soja and Maria Thannhauser of Elmira traded trips to the charity stripe twice to hold the Soaring Eagle lead at eight points.

Free throws proved important in the final four minutes, as the teams combined to go 13-for-15, with Fisher hitting all nine of its attempts and Elmira's Maria Thannhauser shooting 6-for-6 down the stretch.  Thannhauser was a perfect 10-for-10 in the contest.

Fisher led 26-24 at the half, on the shoulders of Soja's 11 points.  With the score 3-3, Fisher went on an 11-2 run to gain the lead and Sydney Bloomstein ruled the boards in the first 20, collecting four of her seven first half rebounds in the first six minutes.

Soja scored a career and game-high 25 points while grabbing 13 rebounds and shooting 13-for-15 from the line.  Buckner finished with 19 points and four blocks, while Bloomstein matched her eight points with as many rebounds.

Fisher will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will host Alfred University.  After Saturday's game, the Cardinals will play five straight on the road, followed by five straight at home to close out the regular season.
