St. John Fisher College gave No. 5 University of Rochester all it could handle on Tuesday night, but the Yellowjackets rallied in the second half
to defeat the visiting Cardinals 76-66 in a non-conference Division III women's basketball matchup.
With the win, Rochester ranked fifth in the latest d3hoops.com national poll, improves to 12-0, while the Cardinals fall to 5-8.
It was a back-and-forth first half that featured eight different lead-changes – four by each team. The Cardinals took their first biggest lead of the game at four points at 26-22 on a layup from
Brooke Seavitt with 4:29 left, but Rochester went on a 10-0 run to end the period and led 32-26 at intermission.
The Cardinals, however, kept battling and went on a 7-0 spurt to the start the second half, taking a 33-32 lead on
Sarah Stefanon's basket just over minute into the new stanza.
The Yellowjackets used their depth to their advantage as the game wore on and never trailed again. Rochester pushed its lead to seven points midway through the second half and sealed the win late in the game, going 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final 49 seconds. Ten different players scored for Rochester, as the Yellowjackets finished the game with a 42-5 advantage in scoring off the bench.
For Fisher,
Camaryn Buckner and
Meghan Soja each scored 17 points. Buckner also tallied seven rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. Freshman
Sydney Bloomstein totaled eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, while classmate
Portia Velasco poured in 15 points. Stefanon finished with four points and six rebounds, while Seavitt and
Avery Light combined for five points.
Fisher will return to action on at 6 p.m. on Friday and will host Elmira College.
