The St. John Fisher College Cardinals
suffered a 2-1 loss to the Ithaca College Bombers in an elimination round of the NCAA Regionals to end the Cardinals' season with a 30-14-1 overall record. It is the seventh time in the last 13 years that the Cardinals have reached the 30-win plateau.
Fisher took the lead in the top of the third after
Kelly Jones singled with two outs, then scored on a triple to the fence by leadoff hitter
Jennifer Vanek.
The Bombers tied the game at 1s with a fourth-inning home run, and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI-single.
Fisher rallied with two-outs in the top of the seventh, putting runners on base after singles from
Carissa Carlson and
Jennifer Martin, but a sharply hit ball down the middle that deflected off the pitcher into the hands of the second baseman forced the out at second to end the game.
Danielle Leone suffered the loss on the mound for Fisher, dropping her season record to 11-8 overall.
The second-seeded Bombers advance to Sunday's consolation bracket final, where they'll face the sixth-seeded Keuka Storm. The winner of that game will need to beat top-seeded Messiah twice to claim the regional title.
