Baseball Takes Two From Tigers

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team came through with two wins over visiting Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Fisher's Dugan Yard.  The Cardinals picked up a 7-5 win in the opener and scored one run in the sixth, seventh and one in the eighth innings to collect the 4-3 win in the nightcap.  With the two wins, Fisher, ranked 28th nationally, improves to 22-6 overall and 10-2 in the Empire 8 Conference.  Both teams will play two more games on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fisher.

Game One: Fisher 7, RIT 5

Fisher jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.  Matt Klock hit a two-run single to give his team the lead for good, while Steve Karnyski hit a three-run homer on the very next at-bat.   The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the second, but Fisher answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Pitcher Aaron Benton worked three scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year, while Tim Sylvester notched his third save of the season.  Both Klock and Karnyski each finished with three RBI.  Sean Osterman scored twice, while Ryan Shaughnessy went 2-for-3.

Game Two: Fisher 4, RIT 3 (8)

The Cardinals trailed 3-0, but rallied late in the game, scoring a run in each of the final three innings, to steal the win.  Fisher trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Ben Bostick singled to right to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leo Fusilli.  With two outs, freshman Brad Rush hit a ball between third and short that the shortstop was able to knock down.  The shortstop went home with the ball, but Bostick eluded the tag and scored from second on the play.  In the eighth, Ross Langevin walked, advanced to second on a bunt by Peter Krysztof, went to third on a fielding error, and scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly from Bostick.   Justin D'Amato went 8.2 innings with six striekouts and two earned runs.  Sylvester struck out the one batter he faced and picked up the win.
