The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games, the longest streak for the Cardinals in five seasons,
with a 56-49 victory over the visiting Stevens Ducks on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Wanzer Court.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-9 overall and 8-3 in Empire 8 play, while the Ducks fall to 15-4, 8-3.
The Cardinals took a narrow 25-22 lead into the locker room at the half. After a slow start, the teams found themselves tied at 11 after the Ducks went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit at 8:49. Fisher, however, used a 12-2 run to push back to a 23-13 lead after consecutive 3-pointers from
Amanda Lax,
Colleen Maloney, and
Bonny Gardner and a 3-point play by
Camaryn Buckner, who got fouled as she drove up the middle on a lay-up.
The Ducks responded with 10-2 run to end the half with only a three-point disadvantage.
The teams traded scoring for the first seven minutes of the second stanza, tying the game up at 32 with 12:50 left to play before Maloney could kick off a 13-2 run to put the Cardinals up 45-34.
With 32 seconds left to go, the Ducks brought it in to a six-point deficit, but it was the closest they would come as the Cardinals ended on a good free throw from
Stephanie Sweeney.
Stevens shot a mere 26.7% from the floor, while Fisher shot 33.3%. Maloney led all scorers with 20 points, while
Meghan Soja chipped in with a double-double with 11 points and a team-best 10 boards.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday as they head across town to face RIT at 6 p.m.
