Fisher Uses Big Comeback for Win over Hartwick

The St. John Fisher College football team (8-2, 6-1) scored 49 straight points on Saturday night to defeat host Hartwick College 55-28. With the win, Fisher's postseason life is in the hands of the NCAA Division III Selection Committee, who will select the teams for the remaining six at-large bids for the NCAA Division III Championships on Sunday evening.

Fisher's only two losses during the season were to Salisbury University and Hobart College, who are a combined 16-2 and won their respective leagues, earning automatic bids to NCAAs.  The Cardinals have the 17th highest (out of 239 Division III schools) strength of schedule, one of the criteria used to select at-large bids.

While the Cardinals won by nearly 30 points, Fisher trailed by 17 late in the first half, making Saturday's victory the biggest come-from-behind win in the program's history.

Ryan Kramer used a 24-yard scamper for a touchdown to give Fisher its first lead of the game, 24-20, in the third quarter. The touchdown was the second of five Cardinals scores in the third quarter.

Fisher trailed 20-3 with less than two minutes left in the first half, but a key play late in the second quarter swung the momentum to the Cardinals. Chad Monheim lined up for a 23-yard field goal attempt but the Hawks blocked it. Fortunately for the Cardinals a Hartwick player touched the ball as it squirted into the end zone, and Fisher running back FuQuan Borum recovered. It was the only touchdown for Fisher in the first stanza.

The Cardinals cut Hartwick's 20-10 halftime-lead down to three points, as Cody Miller scored on a three-yard run, capping a nine-play, 54-yard drive to start the second half.

Troy Sant tied the Fisher single-season record for interceptions (7) in the game, intercepting two passes, both of which set up touchdown runs by Kramer.  His second touchdown run of the day - a 13-yard keeper - gave the Cardinals  a 31-20 lead with 3:31 left.    Less than a minute later, Kramer connected with Ryan Francis for 31-yard score.   Adam Burdick scored Fisher's fifth touchdown on the quarter with 47 seconds left in the period on a 66-yard punt return.

Kramer scored his third hree rushing touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter, while Chad Monheim closed out the scoring a career-long 45-yards.

Kramer posted 20 carries for 105 yards, all in the second half, while passing for 174 yards and another score. Miller helped Fisher move the ball all game long, rushing for over 100 yards for the second straight game. He went for 120 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown.  Ryan Francis finished with 109 yards receiving on five catches and caught Kramer's only touchdown toss for his 20th career TD reception.

Dave Vosburgh tied for a team-high eight tackles along with Travis Tones, and also had a sack for a 15-yard loss and an interception which the safety tipped to himself.
