Women's Soccer Loses Late to Stevens

The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team lost their second Empire 8 matchup today, falling to the Stevens Institute Ducks 2-1 at Growney Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher is now 4-6 (1-2) on the season, while Stevens improves to 7-3-2 (2-0-1).

Stevens opened the scoring after Kathleen Schuckers found the back of the net in the ninth minute.  Schuckers danced in the box to create space, before firing the ball past Fisher's Noel Peck for an unassisted goal.

Just before the half, Alexandra Rohloff evened the score with a goal for Fisher.  Rohloff had a breakaway on Steven's Kaitlin McClymont, however McClymont made the save.  But, on the awarded corner, Rohloff capitalized on what may have been an own goal.  The sophomore midfielder floated a ball high toward the Ducks goal and found the net off of a defender's head. Val Hanson was credited with the assist on the goal.

The Cardinals had a couple chances to take the lead in the second half, with attempts by Rohloff and Vicki Alfieri.  In the 53rd minute, Rohloff found herself on another breakaway and tried to lift the ball over the diving Stevens keeper.  However, the kick had just a little too much on it, and creeped over the crossbar.

Later, in the 76th minute, Alfrieri connected on a rebound 18 yards out, and hammered a shot off of the far post.

The Ducks countered with a chance of their own, but Georgia Johnson shot high over Fisher's Jessica Plukas.  Plukas entered the game early in the first half after starting goaltender Peck was injured on a collision in the box.

Late in the second half, Fisher appeared to take the lead, but Kaitlin Moran's goal was denied by an offsides ruling.

Just 19 seconds later, Stevens took the lead for good when Schucker scored her second goal of the game. Lindsay Stoll sent a through ball to Schucker, who beat Plukas for the eventual game winner.

Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it travels to Elmira College to take on the Soaring Eagles.
