The St. John Fisher College volleyball team split its matches on Saturday as they hosted a tri-match for SUNY Cortland and Pitt-Bradford. After the 1-1 day, Fisher is 14-8 overall for the 2011 season.
Fisher
won its second match of the day 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-13) over Pitt-Bradford in a dominating fashion.
Becca Smith,
Rachael Kline and
Mandi Mereness all finished with a team-high nine kills. Mereness also finished with a game-high five blocks against Pitt-Bradford. Smith led the team with 18 digs while
Kelsey Osborne finished with 12 digs and two service aces.
Amy Street led the team with 38 assists and she added two service aces.
SUNY Cortland came into Saturday's matches with a 23-1 overall record and a No. 18 ranking in the latest AVCA National poll. It took the Red Dragons three matches
(25-18, 25-20, 25-20) to hand the Cardinals their eighth loss of the season. Kline led the attack for Fisher with eight kills and four blocks but it wasn't enough to overcome Cortland. Mereness and
Paige Willson both ended with three blocks in the match.
Sheena Asibey had a game-high 13 kills for Cortland and also added four blocks in the match.
Cortland took on Pitt-Bradford in the second match of the day and showed dominance once again taking a 3-0 win (25-10, 25-10, 25-20). Jenna Davies and Ashley Coyle both finished with a team-high seven kills for the Red Dragons. Kristen Guercio posted 36 assists while Jaclyn Lawrence led Cortland with 17 digs.
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts Buffalo State.
