The St. John Fisher College
women's soccer team defeated the Buffalo State Bengals 1-0 at Growney Stadium on Tuesday night to improve its record to 7-8 for the season. The loss drops Buffalo State to 6-10-2 on the season.
Val Hanson shot the game-winning goal in the 69
th minute. After a little scrum in the box, the sophomore put a good foot on the ball and slipped it by Bengals goalie Amber Smyth for her third goal of the year.
In a game that saw only one goal, there was not a shortage of opportunities for both sides. The teams totaled 35 shots in the game, with Fisher outshooting Buffalo 21-14.
Laura Burgstrom led the Cardinals with six shots, while Chelsea Oberkriser and Hanson tallied four each.
A key moment occurred in the 81st minute of the game that kept the Bengals off the board. Buffalo State's Meghan Allen had a 1-on-1 with Fisher goalie
Jessica Plukas and was sent a bouncing pass that was difficult to control. When Plukas converged to the ball in an attempt to gather it, Allen chipped it softly over her head. The ball sailed over the goal, however, and Fisher avoided the threat.
Plukas finished with five saves on the night, including a first half stop against Amanda Sauer, which ricocheted for a rebound but
Amanda Konieczny caught up to the ball and saved it out of bounds right before the goal line.
The team hosts Utica College at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in its final game of the season in which Fisher looks to bring its Empire 8 record over the .500 mark.
