The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team
lost 2-0 to the University of Rochester today, on a chilly afternoon at Growney Stadium. With the loss, Fisher falls to 6-8 on the year.
Rochester scored the game-winning goal in the 9
th minute, when Danielle Crean sent a long, high cross from the right side to the far post. Freshman Katie Sappio was waiting at the left bar, and volleyed the ball in with her right foot.
Though Sappio's goal would prove to be enough for the visiting Yellowjackets, Elizabeth Martens added an insurance goal in the 64
th minute. The goal came from a through-ball up the middle, which led to Martens facing Fisher goaltender
Jessica Plukas for the uncontested shot. Plukas entered the game early in the first half, replacing the Cardinals' starter
Noel Peck.
Fisher had chances to chip at the Rochester lead, but netminder Bridget Lang came up with big saves to preserve the shutout. Late in the game, Lang came up with a hard stop against Fisher's
Chelsea Oberkrieser, who got her body in front of Lang's clear attempt. The save led to a collision that eventually took Lang out of the net. She was replaced by Allison Bernstein, who was uncontested in her time between the pipes.
Lang made 11 saves for Rochester, while Plukas came up with seven for Fisher. Peck made three saves while she was in goal.
Laura Burgstrom led the Cardinals with five shots, while she and
Heather Konieczny both had three strikes on goal.
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it takes on the visiting Buffalo State Bengals.
