Softball Ends Run at Empire 8 Championship

The No. 3 St. John Fisher College softball team fell to No. 2 Ithaca with a 7-3 decision in an elimination game at the Empire 8 Championship held at Alfred State College.

With the loss, Fisher falls to 25-18 overall.  Ithaca will face No. 1 Alfred in the title game this afternoon.

After a quick first two innings, Ithaca jumped out to a solid 3-0 lead kicked off by a double from Annmarie Forenza.  Two more runs in the top of the fourth would put the Bombers to a 5-0 lead before the Cardinals answered.  A single from Carissa Carlson brought in Megan Zoerb, who reached on a walk.  Leanne Merchant brought in Kayla Goodberlet, who reached on an error, and a single from Jamie Harmon would bring in Carlson, but that's where scoring would stop for the Cardinals.

Ithaca scored a run in each of the next two innings to advance to the title rounds with a four-run victory.

Goodberlet, Carlson, Harmon and Graves each tallied a hit in the loss.  Sarah Stefanon took the loss from the mound for the Cardinals, pitching four innings, fanning two Bombers and allowing two runs with eight hits.  Michelle Krier pitched three innings in relief, allowing no runs with only one hit and two strikeouts.  Stefanon falls to 8-7 on the season overall.
