The No. 3 St. John Fisher College Cardinals took a 2-0 win over No. 2 Ithaca in game one of today's Empire 8 Championship play, before falling 5-1 to No. 1 Alfred in the nightcap.
Game one: Fisher 2, Ithaca 0
A double from
Megan Zoerb with bases loaded in the second inning would bring in two runs to push No. 3 Fisher to a 2-0 victory over No. 2 Ithaca in game one of the Empire 8 Championship in Alfred, N.Y.
Meghan Graves, who kicked off the second inning with a single, was advanced to second on a sacrifice by
Kelly Jones. Lauren O'Brien was hit by the pitch to get on base, and the runners were advanced on a single from
Jenn Vanek to load the bases with one out and give Fisher the opportunity to go ahead. Zoerb stepped to the plate and doubled, scoring Graves and O'Brien - the only two runs the Cardinals would need to surpass the Bombers.
Zoerb, Graves, and
Carissa Carlson each finished 2-for-3 from the plate.
Sarah Stefanon pitched the complete game, scattering only four hits and fanning three Bomber batters. With the win, Stefanon improves to 8-6 on the season.
Game Two: Fisher 1, Alfred 5
The Saxons went on a scoring spree to jump to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning to steal the win from the Cardinals.
With two outs in the top of the third, Fisher responded with an unearned run from Goodberlet, who reached on an error by the rightfielder before scoring off an error by the first basemen. It wasn't enough, as the rest of the game went scoreless.
Michelle Krier took the loss from the mound, pitching two innings but allowing five earned runs.
Fisher will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., rematching against Ithaca in an elimination game.
