Fisher Ties College-Record for Wins

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team crushed the opposing Utica College Pioneers 17-5 on its way to tying a College-record for wins at 15 (15-1 overall, 6-1 E8) Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. With Fisher's win, coupled with RIT's win at Nazareth today, the Cardinals can earn the No 1 seed for next weekend's Empire 8 Conference Championship with a win at Elmira College on Tuesday.

If Fisher wins on Tuesday, the Cardinals will host Ithaca College at 4 p.m. on Friday in the Empire 8 Semifinals, whle a Fisher-loss on Tuesday would make the Cardinals the No. 3 seed and would play at Nazareth.

Fisher had to mount a slight comeback in the game, as it faced two different one-goal deficits in the first half. Utica had a 4-3 lead early in the second period when Fisher turned up the intensity and took over the game. The Cardinals went on to score 12 unanswered goals throughout the next 20:09 to take total control of the game, 15-4. Fisher showed an aggressive defense and offense which led to the burst of goals in the second and third periods.

Connor Henderson led the Cardinals with four goals while also having an assist. In inverse fashion, senior Mike Cummins had four assists while classmate Chris Schmidt added five points (2 goals, 3 assists) on Senior Day. Sophomore teammates Kyle Denhoff (1 goal, 2 assists), Mitch Ritchie (2 goals, 1 assist) and junior Utica-transfer Ryan Schmidt (3 goals) each had three points.

Attack Justin Tomzak chipped in a two-point game (1 goal, 1 assist) along with senior Scott Bowen (2 goals). Sophomore Kory Smart got in on the action, adding his fourth goal of the year to start the 12-goal run and knot the score at four.
