The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team locked up one of four spots in the Empire 8 Conference Championship today,
as the No. 10 Cardinals earned a 9-5 win at Alfred University.
With the win, Fisher, who started the week off as one of only three undefeated teams in the country, before dropping a 14-10 decision on Wednesday at No. 11 Nazareth, improves to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 standings.
Fisher jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 5-1 at halftime, but entered the final quarter, clinging to a 6-5 advantage.
Fisher's Connor Henderson scored a man-up goal on a pass from Dave Malone two minutes into the fourth to put Fisher back up two goals at 7-5. Eric Klein scored his third goal of the year nearly one minute later and Ryan Schmidt added an insurance-goal in the final seconds to close out the scoring.
Fisher led 5-0 with 1:21 left in the first half and enjoyed a 3-0 lead after the opening quarter.
Ryan Schmidt scored two of his three goals in the first half, while
Jeff Price found the back of the net twice in the first half and added an assist.
Henderson, who led Fisher on the day with a season-high four points, finished with two goals and two assists, including a pass to set up Chris Schmidt for a goal midway through the third quarter.
Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and will host Medaille College.
