The St. John Fisher College softball team turned around from an 8-0 loss in the first game of a doubleheader against nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland to break the Red Dragon's 15-game win-streak with a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
With the split, Fisher moves to 20-14 overall on the season, while #8 Cortland moves to 26-6.
Game One: Cortland 8, Fisher 0
It was a slow start for both teams before Cortland scored three runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to take a five-inning, 8-0 victory.
The Cardinals were held hitless, while the Red Dragons tallied up 11.
Danielle Leone fell to 9-5 on the season with the loss from the mound, allowing three earned runs and striking out one batter.
Game Two: Fisher 3, Cortland 0
Leanne Merchant led the Cardinals to a stellar 3-0 win in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.
The Cardinals got on the board in the second, taking a 1-0 lead when Merchant, who singled through the left side to get on bag, was brought home by
Megan Rogers.
Without an answer from the Red Dragons, the Cardinals increased the lead to three in the third. With two outs and
Carissa Carlson on base on a walk, Merchant homered - her fifth of the season - to bring in two RBI and her second run of the game.
It was quick innings following the third, with both teams not seeing chances until the seventh, but the game would end at 3-0.
Sarah Stefanon earned the win from the mound for Fisher, scattering nine hits and recording two strikeouts. With the win, Stefanon improves to 6-5 on the season.
Fisher returns to action as it hosts St. Lawrence University this Friday at the Fisher field, in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The Cardinals will then honor its seniors on Saturday, following a doubleheader against Nazareth beginning at 1 p.m.
