Softball Falls Twice to Ithaca

Leanne Merchant hit a home run in the first game versus Ithaca College.
The St. John Fisher College softball team fell to 17-13 overall and 4-4 in the Empire 8 conference as it was swept by Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Field. The Cardinals had trouble at the plate, generating a single run in the doubleheader.

Fisher had a tough time at the plate, only scoring one run on four hits. The run came on a home run by freshman Leanne Merchant to deep left center field. Jenn Vanek had a good game from the batters box, going 2-for-4 and Kayla Goodberlet added a hit.

Danielle Leone got the start and pitched four innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits while striking out two. In relief, Michelle Krier pitched three innings and only surrendered one run and four hits while also striking out two Bomber batters.

Fisher gave up one unearned run in the first inning and Carissa Carlson tried to get the Cardinals right back in the mix. In the top of the second inning, Carlson led off with a single to left field, advancing to second on an errant throw by the left fielder. This was the best opportunity for Fisher, who failed to earn another hit in the five inning game.

Sarah Stefanon started on the mound and only gave up three earned runs in over four innings of pitching.

Fisher will look to rebound quickly as it faces another Empire 8 foe, Utica, tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Fisher Field.
