Wing Lifts Fisher Past Neumann with a Walk-Off Hit

Kevin Wing hit a single into the right centerfield gap to score Phil Pettinella for the win.
Kevin Wing lifted the St. John Fisher College baseball team past Neumann University (PA) 5-4 with a walk-off hit to score Phil Pettinella in the bottom of the 10th inning. Pettinella led-off the inning with a base-hit to leftfield and advanced to second on a Leo Fusilli sacrifice bunt. Fisher leaves historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, FL with a 5-3 record.

The Cardinals gave up two runs in the first inning but quickly took the lead back in the bottom. Fisher ran itself to two runs, created by a Ross Langevin delayed steal of second which forced a throwing error by the catcher into centerfield. This allowed Ben Bostick to score from third base and the errant throw was bobbled in centerfield, allowing Langevin to cross the plate as well to tie the game at two. Jon Gibbs created a run by getting hit by a pitch, stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. Sophomore Teagen Barresi came to the plate and skied a sacrifice fly to leftfield, scoring Gibbs to go up a run, 3-2.

Neumann would strike again in the third, this time scoring a couple of unearned runs on an inning prolonged by an error to make the score 4-3. Fisher would tie it up again in the fifth with two outs when Ryan Shaughnessy scored on a Langevin triple to right center. Shaughnessy reached when he lead-off the inning with a base-hit lined into leftfield.

Andrew Van Slyke earned a no-decision in the start as he went five solid innings only giving up two earned runs on five hits while fanning four. Middle relief was key as Geoff Martone, Aaron Benton and Zach Weaver pitched one inning apiece, holding the Knights hitless and scoreless. Sophomore Tim Johnson got the call for the ninth and tenth innings also holding the opposing team hitless and scoreless to earn his first win as a Cardinal.
