Baseball Falls Just Short to Brockport

A single from Marc Montesano brought in two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it a one-run game.
The St. John Fisher College baseball team (7-5) dropped its home-opener at Dugan Yard to the College at Brockport (6-6) on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, coming up just short in the bottom of the ninth to allow the Golden Eagles to escape with a 7-6 win.

The Cardinals had the tying run on third base but could not capitalize in the bottom of the ninth.  The bottom half started off with Fisher at a three-run deficit, but the Cardinals quickly filled up the bases.  A walk to Sean Osterman and singles from Steve Karnyski and Ben Bostick loaded the bases for Fisher, setting up Marc Montesano's two-RBI single to right field with two outs.  With Bostick on third, Fisher had the chance to score the tying run, but could not come through.

Brockport got the bats swinging early, bringing in three runs over the first two innings before Fisher could get on the board.  With a 3-1 lead, Brockport's Max Zimmerman opened the sixth inning with a home run to kick off a two-run inning that gave Brockport a four-run advantage.  Montesano's triple in the eighth looked like a chance for Fisher to close the gap after he was hit in on a single from Teagen Barresi, but a double-play would bring the inning to a quick close.

Montesano finished with two hits, one run, and two RBI.  Barresi and Karnyski each picked up two hits and one RBI apiece, while Bostick finished with a team-high four hits, paired with two RBI.

Brockport's Steve Locke picked up the win for the Golden Eagles, with James Williamson recording his first save of the season.  Fisher's Jeremy Willard dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Fisher returns to action on Sunday, when it travels to take on Scranton University in a 12 p.m. matchup.
