The St. John Fisher College softball team picked up
a key 4-2 win over Division III powerhouse Neumann on a sunny morning in Tuscon, Ariz.
Samantha Vara recorded the Cardinals' first run of the game in the first inning, with help from a sacrifice bunt from
Megan Zoerb and hits by
Kayla Goodberlet and
Carissa Carlson. Freshman
Leanne Merchant ripped a double that pushed Carlson home, giving the Cardinals' a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
Vara recorded an RBI in the second inning, giving
Jenn Vanek the opportunity to score. The Cardinals, up 3-0, got a scare in the third inning when Neumann responded with two runs, but held the Knights scoreless through the rest of the game.
Kelly Hausler's triple in the bottom of the sixth further sealed the win for the Cardinals, advancing pinch runner
Kristin McCoy to the plate.
Freshman
Danielle Leone led the Cardinals from the mound for all seven innings, recording eight strikeouts and allowing zero earned runs.
