Brandeis University's Terrell Hollins tallied 21 rebounds, 16 points and four assists to lead the Judges to a 66-52 win over host St. John Fisher College in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday.
Brandeis will now advance to the “Sweet 16” and will face Rhode Island College in the Regional Semifinals next Friday, site and time to be determined. With the loss, Fisher finishes its season with a 23-6 overall record.
For Brandeis, Vytas Kriskus, who shot 3-for-5 from 3-point range, led all scorers with 17 points, while Kenny Small added 14 points, while shooting 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. For the two games at Fisher this weekend, the duo shot a combined 17-for-23 (73.9%) from 3-point range.
Fisher jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Brandeis went on a 13-0 run to take a 13-5 lead five minutes into the game. The Cardinals, came right back though and tied the game at 13-13 on Brandon Witte's 3-pointer with 12:36 left in the first half.
The Judges, however, led for the rest of the game, as Hollins tallied 13 points and 14 rebounds in the first half and led 35-27 at intermission.
In the second half, Brandeis took a 58-41 lead on a 3-pointer from Kriskus with 7:48 left, but the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run and trimmed the lead to eight points with 3:13 left on two free throws from
Matt Newman. Fisher, who shot 1-for-8 from 3-point range in the second half and just 3-for-17 for the game, however, never got any closer.
For Fisher,
Jordan Gettings scored 16 points, while Newman, who became Fisher's all-time leader in games played with 114, added 12 points.
