Women's Basketball Comes from Behind to Beat Alfred

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball rallied from nine points down in the second half and defeated visiting Alfred University 50-48 on Tuesday night.

With the win, Fisher improves to 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the Empire 8, while Alfred falls to 9-12, 3-9.

Alfred's Lyndsay Murphy scored 24 of her team's 48 points.   Eleven of the points (nine of which came on 3-pointers) came during a 12-3 run that put the Saxons up 41-32 with 8:40 left.

Fisher, however, answered with a 12-0 run and never trailed again after Colleen Maloney's 3-pointer with 5:35 left put the Cardinals up 43-41.

Fisher's Stephanie Sweeney came up clutch in the closing moments. Her runner through the lane with just under a minute left put the Cardinals up 49-46. After an Alfred bucket and a missed jumper by the Cardinals, the Saxons tried to take the lead on a 3-pointer from Courtney Lincoln with five seconds left, but the shot came up short and Sweeney grabbed the defensive rebound.

Sweeney made one of two free throws with 1.2 seconds left and sealed the win with a steal at mid-court as time expired.

The game was tied at 25-25 after the opening 20 minutes. Alfred led 13-6 over the game's first 10 minutes, but Fisher went on 13-0 run over the next five minutes and led 19-13 with under five minutes left in the first half.    The Saxons, however, made three of the six first-half 3-pointers in the closing moments and rallied to knot the game at 25 going into the locker room.
