The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team picked up the pace in overtime to
take home a 72-65 win over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles Friday night.
A good lay-up, followed by a game-saving 3-pointer from
Jordan Gettings in the final seconds of regulation would give the Cardinals a 59-59 tie to take the game into overtime, after the Soaring Eagles held as much as a six-point lead for most of the second half. After breaking the tie with 4:28 to go in overtime, the Cardinals held the lead for the rest of the extra minutes.
Elmira took a 22-20 lead into the locker room at the half. The Cardinals shot a mere 29.2% from the floor in the first half, improving to 57.1% in the second.
Fisher was led by Gettings, who tallied 20 points, all in the second half, and grabbed seven rebounds.
Michael Wopperer and
Connor Henderson also earned double digit figures, scoring 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Matt Newman led the Cardinals in rebounding, snatching eight boards and pairing it with eight points.
The Soaring Eagles were led by Bobby DiPiazza, who recorded 15 points.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-1 in the Emprie 8 conference and 18-4 overall.
Fisher returns to action when it continues its quest for the Empire 8 title as it hosts Alfred University on Tuesday at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
