Fisher Rallies but Comes Up Short

The St. John Fisher College baseball team lost two games to Alvernia on Sunday, despite valiant comebacks that came up just short in each.

Game One – Fisher 4 - Alvernia 6:

Fisher suffered its first loss of the season to Alvernia 6-4 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. The Crusaders scored three runs in the first inning but Fisher battled back over the next few innings to knot the score.

Jon Gibbs got hit by a pitch in the second and advanced to third by way of two Alvernia wild pitches. Gibbs eventually scored on an RBI by sophomore Matt Klock to make the score 3-1. Gibbs continued his production in the third inning, hitting in Phil Pentinella on a single through the left side. The Cardinals tied the game in the fourth on an infield single by Marc Montesano that drove in freshmen Ben Bostick. Bostick had got on base when he singled up the middle, and later stole third base on a double steal as Kevin Wing also stole second.

With the score tied at three, Cardinal pitcher Andrew Van Slyke gave up his only two earned runs of the day on a two-run home run. Van Slyke gave up seven hits and struck out three through two outs in the fourth. Freshman Zach Weaver did a solid job in relief, pitching an inning and a third of scoreless ball while inducing three strikeouts.

Montesano finished the game 3-for-4 while Wing and Bostick each finished with two hits apiece

Fisher once again found itself down early, giving up five runs in the second inning. The Cardinals once again showed the ability to score runs and battle back, however coming up short, losing to Alvernia 7-6 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Fisher chipped away at the lead throughout the duration of the game, finally getting the tying run in the sixth inning to knot the score at six. Wing tried stealing third and was successful but a questionable call of batter's interference was ruled against Fisher, ending the rally. Alvernia would capitalize in the top of the seventh by scoring the eventual winning run on a double to left center.

For Fisher, Mike Craig started and pitched four innings giving up five earned runs while fanning four. Middle relievers Geoff Martone and Aaron Benton each pitched an inning, respectively, giving up just one hit and no runs between the two. Tim Johnson got the loss in the seventh, despite inducing a groundball and getting a strikeout in the inning.

At the plate, Leo Fusilli had a solid 2-for-2 performance in the designated hitter slot, hitting a triple and single while scoring twice while driving in two runs. Klock went 1-for-1 with a run scored while Gibbs and Ross Langevin both had a hit with a run scored. Ryan Shaughnessy and Jay Nevada each had a hit in the game.

Fisher will return to action tomorrow against Thiel College (PA) at 2:30 p.m. The Cardinals defeated Thiel on Saturday in their season-opener, 20-7.
