The St. John Fisher College softball team posted a 2-0 win over No. 16 Wartburg College in the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Arizona. With the win, Fisher improves to 2-0 on the year.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, freshman
Jenn Vanek blasted a one-out triple down the left field line to get into scoring position.
Samantha Vara stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch RBI sacrifice fly to center to give Fisher a 2-0 lead that would hold up for the win.
Fisher's initial run of the day came in the top of the first after freshman
Kelly Jones doubled to right center. The freshman shortstop advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch to give Fisher the early advantage.
Senior
Amanda Shevchuk went the distance and allowed just four hits on the day while striking out five batters. With Wartburg attempting to make a comeback with a lead off double in the sixth, Shevchuk induced a fly-out and ground-out while fanning another batter to avoid trouble.
Kristi Bradley and Jones each went 1-for-3 in the win, while Vanek was 1-for-2.
Fisher will return to action tomorrow with games against College of St. Elizabeth (1 p.m. EST) and Kenyon College (3:30 p.m. EST).
