Baseball Rallies For Another Split With Stevens

The St. John Fisher College baseball team booked another doubleheader split with Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday.

Fisher had an 11-0 lead a wild first game that included three combined grand slams, but the Ducks took advantage of a costly error to tie the game at 16, and came through with a bases-loaded single to earn a 17-16 eight-inning win. In the nightcap, Fisher plated five runs in its first at bat, and three more in the third inning to cruise to a 10-3 win.

Game One: Stevens 17, Fisher 16 (eight innings)
Fisher pounded out five hits, including homeruns from Phil Pettinella and Teagen Barresi in its first two at bats to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Barresi single-handedly gave the Cardinals a 10-run cushion with a grand slam to left field in Fisher's half of the third for his second blast of the day.

The Ducks cut the lead to eight after three innings, 11-3, and added three runs in the fifth and five more, including a grand slam in the sixth, to trim the Fisher lead to four (15-11) after six innings. After Jon Gibbs went down on strikes with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Stevens tied the game at 15-all on another grand slam, the third of the game.

Ryan Shaughnessy singled in the top of the eighth to bring in Kevin Wing, after a double steal moved two runners into scoring position, but the Ducks escaped more damage with a timely double play to end the inning.

Stevens capitalized on an errant throw to first base to score one run, and came through with the game-winning RBI single to take the win.

Pettinella finished with six RBI on a 3-of-4 showing from the plate, while scoring three runs and drawing three walks (one intentional). Matt Klock and Kevin Wing each picked up three hits and scored three wins. Geoff Martone took the loss in relief.

Game Two: Fisher 10, Stevens 3
Barresi came through with his second grand slam of the day in the finale. Following a single from Leo Fusilli that scored Pettinella, the freshman hammered a pitch to right field to give Fisher an early 5-0 advantage.

Although the Ducks cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, Fisher added to its lead on another RBI base hit from Barresi. John Quartironi's double added to the rally, with Adam Bristol's groundout to short also bringing runners in to make it 8-2.

Bristol's home run in the seventh helped seal the win, and was one of two late insurance runs for the Cardinals.

Barresi was a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored, with Brandon Lewis earning the complete-game win after scattering four hits and posting nine strikeouts.
