The St. John Fisher College softball team split Saturday afternoon's doubleheader wtih Rochester Institute of Technology. In its first Empire 8 Conference action of the season, Fisher
claimed the first game 3-0, while
R.I.T. took the second matchup 8-0. With the split, the Cardinals are now 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8.
In the first contest, senior pitcher
Amanda Shevchuk led Fisher with a complete game four-hitter while fanning three batters to improve to 5-2 on the year. Freshman
Megan Zoerb went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, while classmate
Carissa Carlson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Jenn Vanek,
Jamie Harmon, and
Kelly Jones each finished with a hit, while Lauren O'Brien scored a run for the Cardinals.
R.I.T. got a run in the first inning of the second game, and held the Cardinals scorless before breaking the game open. In the fourth inning, the Tigers combined some timely hitting with Fisher to grab six runs and take a commanding lead in the game. Fisher would give up one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the mercy rule into effect.
Zoerb had another good outing, going 1-for-2 at the plate for one of the team's three hits. Jones and senior
Kristi Bradley added a hit apiece in the loss.
Melissa Blakeney lasted 3.2 innings from the circle and gave up three earned runs before being relieved by Shevchuk. Blakeney took her first loss of the season, falling to 6-1.
Fisher will return to action on Thursday when it hosts University of Rochester for an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
