Medaille College ended the game with a 19-12 run over the final five minutes and
downed host St. John Fisher College 73-68 in women's basketball action on Monday night at Fisher's Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.
With the win, Medaille improves to 7-1, while the Cardinals fall to 4-2.
Medaille led 33-30 at the half, despite committing 17 turnovers over the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Mavericks led by as many as nine points and were up 49-41 with 11:28 remaining. The Cardinals answered with a 10-0 run to take its first lead since midway through the first half at 51-49 with 7:10 left on a pair of free throws from
Colleen Maloney. Maloney, who finished with a team-high 18 points, started the run, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Cardinals within two.
Fisher led 56-54 on a 3-pointer from
Stephanie Sweeney with 5:04 left, but the Mavericks took the lead for good, thanks to a 6-0 spurt over the next 90 seconds. Fisher pulled to within one point at 62-61 with 2:11 left, but the Mavericks scored eight of the game's next 10 points.
Fisher shot just 34.8% (23-of-66) from the floor and just 57.1% (16-for-28) from the foul line, while Medaille shot 51.0% (25-for-49) from the field and 84.6% (22-for-26) from the charity stripe.
For Medaille, Kacie Mills scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half. Susanne Black led all scorers with 19 points.
For Fisher, Sweeney tallied a season-high 16 points and totaled six steals.
Kristen Taliento totaled 11 rebounds, 10 off the offensive glass.
Fisher will return to action on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Stevens Institute of Technology. It will be the first of five games over the next seven days.
