The St. John Fisher College defense forced seven turnovers and freshman running back
With the win, Fisher improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8, setting up a showdown next week with undefeated Alfred University (5-0, 2-0). Utica falls to 3-4, 0-3.
Fisher forced four turnovers in the second half and held Utica to just 28 rushing yards on 33 attempts. The Cardinals also registered six sacks on the day.
Zemaitis, who tallied five rushing touchdowns and 178 yards on the ground in last week's 40-17 win against Ithaca, led the Fisher offense with 120 yards on 21 carries. Senior running back Brad Carlton rushed for 59 yards on nine carries and caught a team-high five passes for 25 yards.
Carlton gave Fisher a 20-10 lead early in the second half, scoring on a six-yard run. After Utica recovered an on-sides kick to start the second half, Nick Krajacic intercepted a pass, giving the Cardinals the ball at the Utica 27.
Zemaitis made it 27-10 with a one-yard run with 9:44 left in the fourth quarter, capping a seven-play, 67 yard drive.
Utica responded with an 11-play, 64-yard drive with Jeremy Meier snagging a 14-yard reception from quarterback Andrew Benkwitt with 6:45 remaining, making it 27-17.
The Pioneers recovered their second on-sides of the day on the ensuing kick, but the drive ended on downs at the Fisher 37.
Fisher sealed the win on its next possession, as the Cardinals drove 63 yards with Zemaitis plunging into the endzone from four yards out with under a minute to go.
Utica had possession for nearly 20 minutes during the first half, but the Cardinals entered intermission with a 14-10 lead.
Fisher drove 65 yards on eight plays in the closing moments of the half and took the lead for good with six seconds left, as Dan Witkowski snagged a 17-yard touchdown reception from Tim Bailey.
Utica took the lead with a 39-yard field goal from Denis Avdic midway through the first quarter.
The Cardinals made it 7-3 on a touchdown run from Zemaitis, scoring on a four-yard run with four seconds left in the first quarter.
Utica took a 10-7 lead after Meier recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown with 1:27 left in the half. The Pioneers punted the ball, and after the punt hit a Fisher player who was blocking at the goal line. Meier dove on the ball, giving Utica the advantage.
Fisher's Andy Episcopo led the defense with a career-high 16 tackles and one sack. John Sheridan finished with two interceptions and one fumble recovery, while Andre Bliss and Dave Vosburgh also intercepted a pass. Artie Bixsby also recovered a fumble.
Chris Sawyer tallied a career-high 2.5 sacks, while Joel Vickers and Adam Kinney combined for 2.5 sacks.
Bailey completed 17-of-29 for 140 yards.
For Utica, Benkwitt completed 28-of-47 passes for 226 yards, but was intercepted five times. Cody Elliott led the Pioneers with nine catches for 54 yards.
