St. John Fisher College’s Sarah Stefanon (Perry/Perry) of the softball team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 21, 2013.

In an 8-0 week for the Cardinals, Stefanon threw in seven of the eight games, earning the winning decision in six of those outings. Most impressively, the senior allowed just one earned run in 41 innings pitched over the week while striking out 66 hitters. She surrendered just 15 base knocks on the week, including two, one-hit contests.

Stefanon’s week started with an 11-0 win in game two of a nonconference doubleheader with Keuka College. She struck out 10 Storm batters and allowed just one hits in the mercy-rule shortened five inning game.

Two days later was by far the signature moment of Stefanon’s week. In the doubleheader against The College at Brockport, the Perry native threw 15 innings in two-complete games, scattering four hits, allowing just one run which was unearned while fanning 26 hitters, including 16 in the extra-inning 2-1 win in the first game. Fisher took the second game 3-0.

She threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts against Nazareth on Friday, a game the Cardinals won 11-0, even though Stefanon did not earn a decision.

On Saturday, the right-hander pitched two, seven-inning complete games against Alfred, winning the first contest 1-0 and the second 6-1. The 6-1 win featured Stefanon’s only earned run of the week, allowing a solo shot in the nightcap. In the 1-0 victory, Stefanon struck out 12 batters to keep the Saxons off the scoreboard.

Stefanon capped the week with a rescheduled 6-0 win over Nazareth on Sunday, as she surrendered just three hits while striking out eight.

The Cardinals will return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday when it travels to the Amherst Recreation Center for a matchup with D’Youville College.
