Junior Alexandra Rohloff (Clarence/Clarence) of the St. John Fisher College women’s soccer team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 11, 2012.
In the final week of the season, the Cardinals ended with a win to capture the ECAC Upstate Championship. Rohloff was named as the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player for her performance over the weekend.
On Saturday, 90 minutes of regulation ended with a 1-1 tie between the No. 2 seed Cardinals and the No. 3 seed Hartwick Hawks. Another 20 minutes of sudden death overtime was still not enough to decide who would advance to the championship match as a penalty shootout ensued. Rohloff capitalized on Fisher’s fourth penalty kick. Each of the Cardinal shooters would convert and a diving save by senior goalkeeper Sydney DeVitto (Livonia/Conesus) on Hartwick’s second shooter would send Fisher to the final.
In the championship contest on Sunday against Brockport , who cruised to the finals with a 7-0 victory over the No. 4 seed Cazenovia College Wildcats in the semifinals, Rohloff would deliver mightily. Her goal in the 41st minute gave the Cardinals a 2-0 halftime lead. In the 53rd minute, she assisted on what would eventually turn out to be the game-winning goal, finding fellow classmate Krista Pilla (Shaker/Latham), whose shot from 23 yards out would be placed perfectly just under the crossbar and out of reach of the outstretched fingertips of the Brockport goalkeeper. Although Brockport rallied to make it interesting by bringing the score to within a goal, Rohloff and the Cardinals held on to win 3-2.
For the season, Rohloff led the Cardinals with nine goals and 21 points. She also tallied three assists and tied the team lead with two game-winning goals.
The ECAC Upstate Championship’s Most Outstanding Player is not the first accolade to roll in for Rohloff this season. Earlier in the week, she was named to the Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team. She was also named Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 4, 2012.
