St. John Fisher College’s Laura Burgstrom (Spencerport/Rochester) of the women’s soccer team has been named as the St. John Fisher College Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 24, 2010.

In a 1-1 week for the Cardinals, Burgstrom led a midfield that aided the defense in holding
opponents to 1.5 goals per game.

In Saturday’s overtime loss to University of Rochester, Burgstrom gave Fisher the quick 1-0 lead on a 35-yard free kick 10:52 into play. In a game that featured as much defense as offense against the notoriously tough Yellowjackets, the freshman midfielder was instrumental in winning balls in the middle to help Fisher keep control.

The Cardinals, now 5-10-2 overall, return to action as they close out Empire 8 play on Saturday at Utica College at 2 p.m. Postseason hopes are still alive for Fisher, who could clinch a spot in the top four with a win over Utica, coupled with an RIT loss/tie to Elmira and a Hartwick loss to Stevens.
