St. John Fisher College’s Jackie Romano (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) of the women’s soccer team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 12, 2014.
The freshman recorded her first collegiate goal on what would be the game-winning goal in Fisher’s 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Hartwick College.
With the win, Fisher has won three games in a row, improving to 3-1 in conference play and 5-8 overall while the Hawks fall to 3-2-1 and 7-4-1, respectively.
Hartwick took an early 1-0 lead when Casey Boucher knocked in her seventh goal of the year off of a corner kick. The Hawks maintained that lead until Romano found Taryn Guinta, whose one-timer tied the game with three minutes left in regulation.
The overtime period didn’t last for long, as Romano tallied her first collegiate goal just three minutes in. Allison Mooney’s pass went through the entire defense and found Romano, who slipped the ball past Annie Millar toward the lower right corner of the net.
Fisher continues Empire 8 play at 2 p.m. Saturday against visiting Ithaca College.
