St. John Fisher College has named #Meg Merriam# of the women’s lacrosse team as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 5, 2009.
In a three-game week where the Cardinals went 1-2, the sophomore midfielder scored three goals in each game to finish the week with nine goals.
Although the Cardinals fell behind 14-10 with just over 10 minutes left on Wednesday at Growney Stadium, Fisher scored the next three goals, including a shorthanded goal with 59 seconds left, but failed to tally the equalizer and fell to Nazareth College 14-13. Fisher rebounded with a 15-5 drubbing of host Alfred University on Saturday. Merriam’s three goals all came in the first half, and helped the Cardinals to a 9-2 lead at the intermission.
On Sunday, The team scored four goals over the final 4:43 to trim a five-goal deficit down to one, but ran out of time in the Cardinals’ 8-7 loss to visiting Rochester Institute of Technology. Merriam’s second goal of the afternoon tied the game at three eight minutes into the final period after the Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first half. The Tigers regained control over an eight-minute span however, with a string of five unanswered goals before Fisher pulled itself back into the game.
For the season, Merriam is tied for the team lead with 17 goals and ranks second with a combined 19 points (17g, 2a).
Fisher (3-5 overall, 1-2 Empire 8) will take on Ithaca College in another Empire 8 Conference game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
