St. John Fisher College’s #Brandon Witte# of the men’s basketball team has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 11, 2009.
In a 2-1 week for the Cardinals (9-2 overall, 4-1 Empire 8), the sophomore averaged 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shots.
After scoring five points on Tuesday in a loss at Rochester Institute of Technology, Witte came through in the clutch in Friday’s 48-46 win at Utica College.
Witte drained a 3-pointer with 1:40 remaining to give Fisher a two-point lead and rejected a Utica shot that would have tied the game with 27 seconds remaining to seal the win. He finished the game with 10 points.
On Sunday, Witte made his first career start and shot 4-for-4 from the floor and totaled nine points.
For the season, Witte is averaging 8.4 points and 3.8 rebounds. He also ranks second on the team in blocked shots with 11 and third on the squad in steals with 12.
Fisher will return to action at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the opening round of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament. The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament and will play No. 7 Rochester Institute of Technology at Nazareth College in the opening round.
