St. John Fisher University Athletics

Kelly Zaferakis joined the St. John Fisher field hockey program as an assistant coach in 2020 following a brilliant four-year playing career for the Cardinals. 

The Cardinals have gone 39-8 against Empire 8 Conference opponents during regular-season play since Zaferakis joined the coaching staff. They have reached the E8 postseason tournament every year, winning the conference title in 2020 and 2021. Fisher reached the conference championship game in 2022 and 2023. 

A forward and goalkeeper during her collegiate career, Zaferakis played in 72 games and made 32 starts from 2016-19. She tallied 54 total points on 25 goals and four assists over her first three seasons before switching to goalkeeper – a position she had not played previously – as a senior in 2019. She played and started in all 20 games that season, registering a .732 save percentage and a 1.30 goals-against average. She made 71 saves and recorded five shutouts. 

Zaferakis helped the Cardinals capture their first Empire 8 title and win their first NCAA Tournament game as a freshman in 2016. She was part of 64 total victories over her four seasons as a Cardinal.
