PATCHOGUE, NY – The St. John Fisher University baseball team continued its strong play on Friday afternoon, earning an 11-4 victory over St. Joseph's (L.I.) in non-conference action. The Cardinals improve to 16-5 on the season with the win.
Fisher totaled 13 hits in a balanced offensive effort, highlighted by a big day from Noah Pohrte, who went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs. Jackson Frey added two hits and drove in two runs, while Mario Cubello contributed two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Scott Sleurs also chipped in with two hits, including a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. Ryan Vanderlip recorded two hits and scored twice. Austin Droge recorded a hit and scored a run as the Cardinals produced offense throughout the lineup.
On the mound, Colin Barry (1-0) earned the win, striking out four over three innings while allowing one run on two hits. Michael Bowler and Nate Nilsen handled the middle innings, combining for five strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Luke Horton closed the game, tallying two strikeouts in 2.1 scoreless innings. As a staff, Fisher pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
How It Happened
Fisher jumped out early in the first inning, scoring two runs on an RBI single from Jackson Frey to take a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals added another run in the second as Pohrte launched a solo home run to extend the advantage to 3-0.
After St. Joseph's got on the board in the third, Fisher responded in the fourth when Pohrte struck again with a two-run home run, pushing the lead to 5-1.
The Golden Eagles chipped away, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Fisher answered in the seventh inning with three key runs. Jack Griffin delivered a two-run triple, and Cubello followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-4.
The Cardinals put the game out of reach in the ninth, plating three more runs. Cubello tripled home a run, Sleurs added an RBI triple, and Pohrte capped the scoring with an RBI single to secure the 11-4 victory.
Horton shut the door over the final innings to preserve the win.
