Fulton Strikes Out Eight, Baseball Sweeps Alfred In Snow-Shortened Contest

ALFRED, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University baseball team completed the three-game weekend sweep of Alfred University, winning 10-0 in a five-inning snow-shortened game on Sunday afternoon at Galanis Stadium in Empire 8 action. The Cardinals improve to 23-6 (12-2) on the season with the victory.

Fisher totaled 10 hits and drew six walks, with the big blow coming in the fifth inning when the Cardinals sent nine batters to the plate and scored five times to put the game away. Jordan Perry led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI, while Noah Pohrte added two hits and three RBI out of the nine-spot. Mario Cubello drove in two runs, Austin Droge contributed a hit and an RBI, and Jack Griffin  notched two hits.

On the mound, Ethan Fulton (2-1) was outstanding in his four innings of work, allowing just four hits while striking out eight without issuing a walk. Dylan Becker came on in relief and finished the game with a clean fifth inning. Combined, Fulton and Becker did not allow a run all afternoon.

How It Happened

Fisher grabbed the lead in the first inning , capitalizing on two free passes. Jordan Perry drew a walk and Ryan Vanderlip followed with another before Jackson Frey delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Perry and put the Cardinals up 1-0.

Fisher pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third. Jack Griffin singled and Ryan Vanderlip reached on a fielder's choice, with Griffin advancing to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Jackson Frey then reached via fielder's choice to load the bases, and he stole second before Mario Cubello singled through the right side to plate both Griffin and Frey, both scored unearned.

The Cardinals added two more in the fourth inning, again taking advantage of an Alfred miscue. Jacob Penafeather reached on an error by the center fielder, advanced to second, and scored on a Noah Pohrte RBI single. Austin Droge then executed a sacrifice bunt to move Pohrte to third, and Jordan Perry followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Fisher put the game away in the fifth with a five-run outburst. With two outs and the bases loaded, Noah Pohrte laced a two-run single to right field, and Austin Droge followed with an RBI single that he stretched into a double. Jordan Perry then delivered a two-run single to cap the scoring and send the Cardinals to a 10-0 final after five innings.

Ethan Fulton worked around a pair of Alfred hits in the third inning — a single by Anthony Cortez and a double by Benjamin Croote — but struck out the side with runners on base to keep the shutout intact. Fulton also stranded a runner after surrendering a single in the fourth, finishing with eight strikeouts. Dylan Becker finished the game efficiently, retiring all three batters he faced in the fifth.
