Softball Splits Twinbill With Geneseo

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher softball team split an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader with SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at the Softball Complex. The Cardinals took game one, 1-0, before the Knights responded with a 7-0 win in game two.

Fisher moved to 22-10 overall (13-3 Empire 8) while Geneseo advanced to 18-9 overall (9-3 Empire 8).

Game One: St. John Fisher 1, Geneseo 0

Junior Molly Kuhn and Geneseo's Gabriella Petroski matched each other through the first five and a half innings, as both pitchers allowed no runs, struck out five, and surrendered four hits.

The Cardinals broke through in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, junior Taylor Shackleton lifted a solo home run to left field to give Fisher a 1-0 lead.

Geneseo was unable to respond in the top of the seventh, sealing the win for the Cardinals.

Kuhn tossed a complete game, allowing five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. It marked her eighth game this season with seven or more strikeouts.

Game Notes

  • Shackleton's home run was her 10th of the season.

  • Freshman Sarah Gross and junior Alyssa Dawson each finished with two hits..

Game Two: St. John Fisher 0, Geneseo 7

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. With a runner on second and no outs, Emily Sylvanus singled up the middle to plate the first run. Ray Schumacher followed with a solo home run to left field to extend the lead to 2-0.

Geneseo added to its lead in the seventh. With one out and bases loaded, Molly Griffin singled to shortstop to drive in a run. Bella Nadzan followed with an RBI single through the right side, and Nevaeh Ross added a two-run single up the middle to make it 6-0. Sylvanus later drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the scoring.

Junior CC Holmes started in the circle for the Cardinals, with senior Hallie Lorimer appearing in relief. Holmes pitched 6.1 innings and struck out two.

The Cardinals will face Nazareth University for an Empire 8 doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, in Rochester, N.Y.
