Baseball's Offense Explodes In Victories Over Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. - In a day that involved twenty extra basehits and 57 runs, the St. John Fisher University baseball team won both sides of the double header, 25-2 and 32-4, on Saturday afternoon at Galanis Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 22-6 (11-2) on the season with the wins.

Game One: St. John Fisher 25, Alfred 2

Fisher wasted no time setting the tone in the first inning, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring six runs. Jordan Perry drew a walk and Jack Griffin singled before a wild pitch moved both runners up. Ryan Vanderlip walked to load the bases, and Jackson Frey was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. A balk by Alfred starter Thomas Makela brought home a second run, and Mario Cubello then singled through the left side to plate two more. Hunter Fales followed with an RBI double, and Jacob Penafeather capped the inning with an RBI double of his own as the Cardinals raced to a 6-0 lead.

Alfred got on the board in the bottom of the first when Cameron Brought hit a solo home run, making it 6-1 after one.

Both teams were quiet through the next three innings as Robert Leach kept Alfred's lineup in check.

Fisher added five more runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 11-1. Consecutive doubles by Hunter Fales and a walk to Jacob Penafeather set the table with two outs before Noah Pohrte singled to score a run. Austin Droge then crushed a three-run home run to left field, and Jordan Perry followed with a single before Jack Grider came on in relief and Jack Griffin added another base hit. The inning continued as Jacob Penafeather hit a two-run home run off Ashton Goring, capping the five-run frame.

The Cardinals blew the game wide open in the sixth, erupting for 11 runs on eight hits. The frame featured a Jack Griffin three-run double, a Ryan Vanderlip RBI double, a Jackson Frey RBI triple, a Jake Crantz two-run home run off a pinch-hit appearance, and an RBI single from Noah Pohrte, as Fisher sent 13 batters to the plate to push the advantage to 22-1.

Alfred scored a lone run in the sixth inning on a Benjamin Croote RBI double, but Fisher answered with three more in the seventh. Jackson Frey led off the inning with a home run to right center, and RBI contributions from Noah Pohrte and Nikolas Nelson — the latter on a sacrifice fly — rounded out the scoring for a final of 25-2.

On the mound, Robert Leach (6-1) picked up the win, tossing five innings while allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out seven. Brandon Benkovics came on in relief and worked two innings, striking out four and allowing one run. Fisher pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts while holding Alfred to seven hits.

  • Fisher scored in five of seven innings on the day.
  • The Cardinals totaled 23 hits and 11 walks as a team.

Game Two: St. John Fisher 34, Alfred 4

The Cardinals exploded out of the gate in the first inning, sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs. Austin Droge led off with a double and scored on a Jordan Perry RBI single. Perry then stole second and came around to score on a wild pitch, and Jack Griffin eventually came home on a Mario Cubello sacrifice fly. Scott Sleurs followed with an RBI single, and the inning continued to pile on as errors by Alfred's defense proved costly — a pair of wild pitches, back-to-back errors from the second and third basemen, and continued pressure from Fisher's lineup allowed run after run. Austin Droge capped the frame with a two-out RBI single before Jordan Perry belted a two-run home run to put the Cardinals ahead 12-0 after one.

Alfred answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by an Ashton Colunio three-run double with two outs, to make it 12-3.

Fisher kept adding in the second inning, scoring four more runs to push the lead to 16-3. Noah Pohrte stole second and scored on Austin Droge's RBI double, and Jordan Perry followed immediately with a two-run home run. Jack Griffin then singled and a pair of wild pitches moved runners up before Mario Cubello capped the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless third inning from both clubs, Fisher tacked on two more in the fourth when Mario Cubello launched a two-run home run to left field, pushing the lead to 18-3.

The Cardinals added two insurance runs in the fifth as Jack Griffin ripped an RBI double to score Austin Droge, and an error on a Jackson Frey ground ball let an additional run score to make it 20-3.

Fisher broke the game wide open again in the sixth, scoring five runs. Jacob Penafeather opened with an RBI double, scoring Scott Sleurs who had led off with a single. Penafeather then scored on a wild pitch, and pinch hitter Brody Becker crushed a solo home run. Jackson Frey then delivered a two-run double to cap a 25-3 advantage after six.

Alfred pulled a run back in the bottom of the sixth on an unearned score, but Fisher answered emphatically in the seventh with seven more runs. Scott Sleurs and Jacob Penafeather opened with singles, and a wild pitch scored Sleurs. Austin Droge then ripped a two-run triple, and Anthony Shortino added an RBI single before Matthew Arnold singled to set up Jackson Frey, who drove in another run. Jacob Penafeather's RBI single and a Noah Pohrte walk with the bases loaded rounded out the scoring as the Cardinals put up their final 32-4 tally.

On the mound, Justin Christensen (5-0) earned the win with three innings of work, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out four. Colin Barry came on in relief and was dominant over three innings, striking out six while allowing just one unearned run. Daniel Dorman finished the game with a clean final inning, striking out one. As a staff, Fisher pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and held Alfred to just five hits.
