No. 24 Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Brockport

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 24 St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 17-2 Empire 8 Conference victory over SUNY Brockport on Wednesday evening at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 10-3 overall (6-0 Empire 8), while the Golden Eagles fell to 8-5 (4-2 Empire 8).

Six Cardinals recorded at least two points, led by junior Ellie Leisen with five on four goals and an assist. Seniors Dharma Makarowsky and Megan McGrath each added four points on three goals and one assist, while senior Kaley Griffin (two goals, one assist) junior Chelsea Lopata (two goals, one assist) and sophomore Athena Lazina (three goals) each totaled three points. 

Fisher's defense hounded the Golden Eagles throughout, causing 19 turnovers and allowing just 11 total shots (six on goal). Brockport committed 27 turnovers in all. 

Junior goaltenders Maggie Cross and Kaylee Gadol both logged action and made two saves apiece. 

How it Happened

The Cardinals pounded the Golden Eagles in the first quarter, jumping out to a 7-0 lead behind two goals each from Leisen and Lazina. Lopata, McGrath, and Makarovsky also found the back of the net in the opening frame. 

Griffin and McGrath extend the Cardinals' run of unanswered goals to nine before Brockport finally cracked the scoreboard on a goal from Hailey Lewkovich early in the second quarter. The score remained 9-2 for the rest of the half. 

Fisher's offense caught fire once again in the third quarter, as it piled on six more goals to make the score 15-1. Leisen accounted for two of them, while Griffin, Lopata, McGrath and Lazina had one each. 

Makarowksy topped off the Cardinals' scoring with a pair of free-position strikes in the fourth quarter. 

Game Notes

  • Leisen scored four goals, marking her fifth game this season with four or more goals.

  • Leisen has tallied five points or more in each of Fisher's last three games and seven times overall this season. 

  • Makarowsky recorded her fifth game this season with four or more points.

  • Senior defender Maddie Lowney caused two turnovers and controlled three draws. 

  • Lopata, junior defenders Emily DeVoe and Leah Hilton and sophomore defender Jess Andrews also caused two turnovers. 

  • Senior Paige Miller led the defense with three caused turnovers, tying her career high.

  • McGrath added a team-high four ground balls to go along with her four points, marking her second game this season with four or more ground balls.
