UTICA, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University baseball team erupted for 11 runs over the final two innings to power past, and complete the weekend sweep of Utica University, 16-5, on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Empire 8 action. The Cardinals improve to 20-6 (9-2) on the season with the win.
Fisher totaled 15 hits and drew eight walks in a dominant offensive performance. Jackson Frey led the way with a career day, going 5-for-5 with a triple, double, six RBI, and three runs scored. Jordan Perry added three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI, while Austin Droge recorded two hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs.
Jack Griffin contributed a double and two RBI, while Mario Cubello chipped in with two hits and two RBI. Jacob Penafeather and Noah Pohrte each added a hit and an RBI, and Hunter Fales reached base three times with three walks and a run scored as the Cardinals' lineup produced throughout.
On the mound, Sean Cleary (4-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing three runs and striking out three. Ethan Fulton got the start, allowing two runs over two innings, while Nathan Weber and Colin Barry combined to finish the game. As a staff, Fisher pitchers recorded eight strikeouts and allowed only seven hits.
How It Happened
Fisher came out swinging in the first inning, plating four runs behind RBI doubles from Frey and Cubello to take an early 4-0 lead.
Utica responded with two runs in the third inning to cut the deficit in half, but the Cardinals answered in the fifth as Frey delivered an RBI single to make it 5-2.
After several quiet innings, Fisher broke the game open in the eighth inning, erupting for eight runs on six hits. Penafeather and Pohrte each delivered RBI singles before Droge ripped a two-run double. Griffin followed with a two-run double of his own, and Frey capped the inning with an RBI single as the lead ballooned to 13-2.
Utica answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Fisher continued to add on in the ninth.
Perry lifted a sacrifice fly to score a run before Frey delivered again with a two-run triple, pushing the advantage to 16-5 and sealing the victory.
