COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore attacker Athena Lazina scored a career-high four goals, but the No. 16 St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team fell 11-10 in overtime to No. 24 Colorado College in a game that went back and forth from wire to wire.
The Cardinals dropped to 2-2 on the young season with the loss, while the Tigers improved their mark to 3-0. The victory marked Colorado College's first in three tries against St. John Fisher.
Lazina netted three of her four goals in the second half, and her last one came late in regulation to force overtime. Junior attacker Ellie Leisen led the Cardinals with five points for the second straight game, scoring twice while dishing out three assists. Senior midfielder Kaley Griffin finished with four total points on a goal and three assists, while senior attacker Dharma Makarowsky had three points with two goals and an assist. Sophomore defender Chelsea Mesick stuffed her stat line with a goal, three ground ball recoveries and a pair of caused turnovers.
Colorado College was led by Sofia Mancino, who scored four times and had an assist for five total points. Elsa Geene and Maddie Jenks scored two goals apiece.
How It Happened
The teams alternated goals in a stalemate of a first half, with St. John Fisher quickly pulling even each time Colorado College went ahead by one. Leisen scored two goals in the first 30 minutes, while Griffin, Lazina and Mesick netted one goal each. Mesick's goal, which came on a free-position shot, tied the game at five with less than two minutes remaining in the half.
Makarowsky scored on a feed from fellow senior attacker Megan McGrath early in the second half to give the Cardinals their first lead of the day, 6-5. That only set off another series of ties and one-goal lead changes, however.
Colorado College tied the score at six midway through the third quarter before Lazina netted her second goal of the contest to put Fisher ahead 7-6. With about a minute left in the frame, the Tigers pulled even once again on a strike from Jenks.
The Tigers reclaimed the lead on a Grace Weber goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals responded with two quick tallies. Lazina made it 8-8 with her third goal of the contest, and about three minutes later, Makarowsky put Fisher in front 9-8 with her second goal of the half on an assist from sophomore midfielder Charlotte Walter.
Colorado College countered with a two-goal run of its own, as Charlotte Iler scored to make it 9-9 about two minutes before Mancino put the Tigers ahead 10-9 with 3:37 left.
Lazina delivered one more time for the Cardinals with 1:54 left in regulation, netting her fourth goal of the game on an assist from Griffin to even the score at 10.
The game appeared ticketed for a second overtime period until Colorado College's Riley Sterling scored with just 57 ticks of the clock remaining in the extra frame, lifting the Tigers to an 11-10 victory.
