GENEVA, N.Y. — William Smith pulled away from the St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team in the second half to secure an 8-2 victory on Wednesday evening inside Hobart and William Smith's Poole Family Dome.
The No. 9 Herrons (4-0) outscored the No. 20 Cardinals (2-3) 6-2 over the third and fourth quarters in the low-scoring, defensive slugfest in which both teams caused more than 10 turnovers. St. John Fisher finished with 13, while William Smith amassed 20.
Senior attacker Dharma Makarowsky led the Cardinals with two points on a goal and an assist, and junior attacker Ellie Leisen accounted for the other Fisher goal. Sophomore defender Chelsea Mesick and senior defender Maddie Lowney each caused three turnovers.
The Herrons got goals from seven different players, including Cat Colvin, who found the back of the net twice. Delaney Cassidy and Kira Fulton also had two-point showings, tallying a goal and an assist apiece.
Grace Rund recorded a game-high eight draw controls for William Smith, which finished with a commanding 11-2 edge in that category. Caitie Baker and Janey Sypeck anchored the Herrons' defense with five and four caused turnovers, respectively.
St. John Fisher junior goalkeeper Maggie Cross made a career-high 12 saves while playing the full 60 minutes. William Smith's Casey Fiore stopped four shots.

William Smith scored three unanswered goals over the final nine minutes of the frame to take a 6-1 lead into the fourth quarter.
William Smith added two more goals in the fourth after Makarowsky scored two minutes in on a free-position shot for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
