Men's Volleyball Falls To Hobart In Four

GENEVA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's volleyball team (9-7, 1-3 United Volleyball Conference) suffered a four-set loss (17-25, 21-25, 27-25, 19-25) to Hobart (8-9, 2-0 United Volleyball Conference) on Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened 

Hobart hit .480 while slamming 13 kills en route to its 25-17 victory in the first set. The Statesmen opened the set on a 10-4 run and pushed their lead to as many as nine points multiple times. Kian Kischke led Hobart with four kills while hitting .571 in the frame, while Noah DeLong and Alain Malcolm each had three. 

The Statesmen stayed hot offensively in the second frame, hitting .417 with 13 more kills. The Cardinals led 15-12 before Hobart used a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead, 16-15. The teams traded points until Hobart separated down the stretch with a 4-1 run to claim the 25-21 victory. DeLong led all players with four kills in the set. 

Fisher extended the match with a fourth-set victory that was tight throughout. Hobart came within one point of securing a three-set sweep, taking a 25-24 lead on a kill from DeLong, but the Cardinals answered with a 3-0 run to claim the 27-25 win. A Hobart service error tied the score at 25 before two consecutive attacking errors from the Statesmen ended the frame. St. John Fisher junior middle blocker Guillermo Perez slammed three kills and had two block solos in the set. 

Hobart wrapped up the match victory with a 25-19 victory in the fourth stanza. After a back-and-forth start, the Statesmen created some breathing room with a 4-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. The Cardinals weren't able to trim their deficit to fewer than three points the rest of the way. 

Match Notes

  • Perez led the Cardinals with 11.5 points in six kills and a career-high eight total blocks, including three solo. He finished the contest with a .400 hitting percentage. 

  • Sophomore Connor Carwile tallied a career-high two service aces. 

  • Senior outside hitter Gabe La Robardiere led the Cardinals with eight kills while hitting .286.
